Giving Back To The Community Through Music

The Sidney Concert Band is an active member of the Saanich Peninsula and enjoys supporting local organizations. Over the years, the Band has collaborated with local middle and high schools through joint concerts and has provided sessional instruction to students. These relationships are important because the youth are the future for sustainability of community bands.

Thank you for all you do for the Band and the wider community!

Jim Kingham

Jim Kingham

President

President Jim Kingham has been with the Sidney Concert Band for fifteen years.  Jim writes that “the Sidney Concert Band is a great group of musicians who all pitch in to get things done for each performance. It is an honour to work with the executive of this organization and such a pleasure to play with these talented and enthusiastic young people.”

Jim has been playing wind instruments since his early teens, first on clarinet with his high school and university orchestras, and then playing saxophone with a four-piece combo throughout the 1960s on saxophone.  “The work with the combo was great fun and a big help in paying my university fees.” recalls Jim. He was also the Band Major for both the Eastwood Collegiate and the McMaster University marching bands.

In addition to his instrumental playing, Jim has sung with various choral groups, ranging from the 100-voice Lysenko Chorale in Toronto to the barbershop harmony of the Victoria Village Squires. Over the years, he has played and sung vocals with the Swiftsure Big Band and is currently a member of the Saxophoria quintet, playing alto sax and performing vocals there as well. Jim continues to be the Master of Ceremonies for the Peninsula Singers concerts – a position he has held for more than a dozen years.

Stephanie Parkins

Stephanie Parkins

Treasurer

Stephanie began her love of the flute and piccolo at the early age of 10, where she began playing in her elementary school music program. As a young teen Stephanie attended the Okanagan Summer School of the Arts Music Program for 2 seasons, where she, along with her sister on clarinet, were the youngest students attending. Being challenged at such a high level at such an early age set the foundation for musical growth. The passion has continued over the years.

Stephanie first joined the Sidney Concert band in the early 2000’s, becoming Vice President then moving on to become President of the SCB from 2004-2007.  As happens, life’s twists and turns took her away from the band for several years. Missing the musical camaraderie that the SCB provided, Stephanie re-joined the band in 2019 where she was warmly welcomed, and soon after, elected to the Board of Directors as Treasurer currently serving her second term.

Paul Schwagly

Paul Schwagly

Stage & Parades Manager

Executive member Paul Schwagly has been with the Sidney Concert band for five years and on the executive for three years.  Paul’s main role on the executive is to be the Stage Manager for all our concerts. He also organizes and helps decorate our entries in the two Sidney Parades each year.

Paul started his playing career in the Saanich school district, playing in the North Saanich Middle school band and then in Parkland’s high school band.  Paul’s main instrument is the Tenor Saxophone but he does also play the clarinet.  Paul writes that “The Sidney Concert band is a wonderful place to play, no matter what age or skill level you are.  Everyone is very supportive of one another.”

In addition to playing in the Band, Paul has spent 23 years with the North Saanich Volunteer Fire department as a volunteer.  He currently holds the position of Deputy.

Peter Amundsen

Peter Amundsen

Secretary

Peter Amundsen started his musical journey with piano lessons, adding trumpet lessons soon after. He kept up both until he completed the Western Board Grade 7 requirements in piano and then concentrated on his trumpet playing. He played trumpet in his school band, community band, Army Reserve Band and the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra until leaving home for further schooling.

Peter spent a year at Calgary’s Mount Royal College and played in a small jazz group there. He continued his studies in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, where he played in the U of A Symphony, the U of A Marching Band and the U of A Big Band. He also played for musical theatre productions (Over the Rainbow, Little Abner and others). After graduation, he moved back home, where he played with the Crowsnest Pass Symphony as well as a small combo playing jazz and big band music. Peter recently moved to Vancouver Island and has played with the Sidney Concert Band for the last two years. He is the current Secretary on the SCB Board of Directors.

Terry Erskine

Terry Erskine

Vice-President

Terry started his musical career in earnest with his high school percussion section in Mission, BC.  At the same time, he played in the Mission community band and a dance band.

He continued with various music groups until 1965 when family and work put music on hold. After retirement in 1998, Terry was asked to join the Sidney Concert Band and has been there ever since. He joined the SCB executive in 2004 and is currently SCB’s Vice-President.  Other music groups Terry has played with include the Bayside Big Band, Peninsula Singers, Greater Victoria Police Chorus and a jazz trio (Trio Brio).

Wayne Speller

Wayne Speller

Music Librarian

Wayne Speller has played in the trumpet section of the Sidney Concert Band for the past 14 years.  He has also served as the band’s Music Librarian for the past 13 years.  As Wayne notes, “Over the years, the Sidney Concert Band has improved significantly, offering many new and interesting musical opportunities.  Serving on the band executive has provided numerous rewarding experiences, working with other talented and hardworking band members.”

Wayne first took up trumpet at about the age of ten.  However, his musical interest and enjoyment really blossomed when he joined a local Victoria junior high school band and continued into his senior high school and university years.  Owing to university and career requirements, Wayne gave up playing for 36 years but began again upon his retirement.  It proved to be a long and challenging effort to returning to active playing, however his musical capabilities significantly improved over his younger days.  Wayne has played in a number of concert bands and big bands in Victoria over the years.  He currently plays in two big bands as well as the Sidney Concert Band.

Yvonne Kupsch

Yvonne Kupsch

Publicity & Website Director

Yvonne joined the Sidney Concert Band in October 2013 and soon got involved with the Board, first helping Chris McCarthy with the media promotions and then acting as SCB President from June 2015 to January 2018. Since then, she has served on the Board as Past-President and as the Publicity & Website Director, working closely with Ken Faulks, who not only produces our fabulous posters but also our website – thanks Ken!

Yvonne is a fairly recent convert to the clarinet, having previously only ever played flute in community bands, prior to moving to Sidney. She continues to get her flute fix through the VCM’s Academy Flute Choir, directed by her SCB clarinet section mate and flautist extraordinaire, Judith Pazder. Yvonne enjoys the camaraderie of her SCB family and values the Band’s efforts to maintain its educational and performance outreach opportunities to up and coming players in the wider Saanich Peninsula community.
